A slow company website — where the problem comes from and what to fix

Published: 2026-09-29Updated: 2026-10-022 minKrzysztof Jaroński

A slow site frustrates visitors and blocks contact before the offer is read. The cause is rarely “bad hosting alone”. More often it is images, scripts, fonts, marketing tags and load order combined.

A lab score (Lighthouse / PageSpeed Insights lab mode) is not a full quality grade and does not guarantee sales. It helps find directions. Field data (CrUX / real users), when available, better reflects what clients experience. See Core Web Vitals and user-centric performance metrics on web.dev.

Contents

Sources

Typical causes: oversized photos, many chat/map/analytics tags loading immediately, heavy UI libraries “just in case”, too many font weights, render-blocking CSS/JS, and sometimes weak compression/cache.

Images

Resize to display size, use modern formats where supported, set dimensions to reduce CLS, lazy-load below-the-fold images and prioritise the hero. In DevTools, sort by size and see whether media dominates transfer.

Scripts

Each widget adds requests and main-thread work. Ask whether it is needed on the home page, whether it can load after interaction, and whether tools are duplicated. Keep analytics intentional, with consent where required.

Fonts

Limit families and weights; consider font-display and controlled hosting so offer text is not invisible while fonts load.

Loading

Prioritise offer content and CTA before decorative extras. web.dev covers load performance. A practical company-site goal is fast appearance of the headline, short description and contact path — not polishing a lab score at any cost.

Lab vs field

Lab is repeatable for debugging. Field shows real devices and networks. A 100/100 score does not guarantee Google visibility or enquiries; a low score is one signal among content, offer clarity and forms.

Priorities

  1. Contact blockers
  2. First screen on mobile
  3. Heaviest assets
  4. Third-party scripts
  5. Cosmetic lab polish
